Hamilton Gardens
Hamilton Gardens covers an area of 58 hectares and
includes the Hamilton East Cemetery and Municipal Nursery.
Original site features such as the riverside pa Te Para
Para and the gully were destroyed before the mid 1960's
through sand removal and use of the site as the City's
rubbish dump.
Development on the higher area alongside Cobham Drive, now known as the Victorian Flower Garden,
began in the early 1950's. Little further progress was
made until the Roger's Rose Garden was developed for the
first World Rose Convention which was held in Hamilton in
1971. However, most development at Hamilton Gardens has
been undertaken since the early 1980's when a plan for the
future of the Gardens was endorsed.
Hamilton Gardens is not being developed in the manner of
conventional botanical gardens. Instead, the concept is
based on the relationship between people and gardens, or
'The story of gardens'. This theme is explored through
five garden collections; The Paradise Garden Collection,
The Landscape Garden Collection, The Productive Garden
Collection, The Fantasy Garden Collection and The Cultivar
Garden Collection. Details about the collections and the
individual gardens are provided elsewhere on this website.
Hamilton Gardens has become a major event venue,
attracting over 1,000 events each year. A majority of
these events are held in the Hamilton Gardens Pavilion
though about 300 weddings are held within the theme
gardens themselves. Visit
